The HISPASAT

Since its establishment in 1989 HISPASAT has managed to consolidate its position as a leading reference in the distribution of satellite television and radio channels and the transmission of digital television platforms in Europe, America and North Africa. It's satellites allow for the most advanced telecommunication services for business, providing broadband access to the Internet and the development of new interactive and multimedia services related to digital technology such as: tele-training, content distribution, video and movies on demand, and high quality video conferencing.

At present, HISPASAT's satellite communications system includes satellites located at the following orbital positions:

- A transatlantic position at 30º West, where three satellites are located, Hispasat 1C, Hispasat 1D, and Spainsat
- An American position at 61º East, where the Amazonas 1 satellite, launched in August 2004, is located, and where a new satellite will be added, Amazonas 2, and

- An oriental position at 29º East, in which the Xtar-Eur satellite is located.

HISPASAT's satellite control centres have become a international and technological benchmark.

Strategic Lines

HISPASAT’s growth in the medium term is focussed on expanding into America through marketing of its Amazonas 1 satellite –at 61º West- and in diversifying its services towards government communications. Offering quality services and the capacity for technical innovation are also the basis for consolidating business in the 30º West orbital position.

Progress in America
The launch in 2004 and of the Amazonas 1 satellite, had allowed the HISPASAT group to make progress in one of it's strategic objectives: internationalisation and expansion into new markets, primarily in Ibero-America and the United States. In line with this project, HISPASAT is focussing on the implementation of ambitious business lines of activity, which are adapted to each market. The key lines of activity include:

- Reinforcing relations with telecommunication operators in Ibero-America and the United States.
- Moving forward from the business model based primarily on providing pure capacity to more integrated business models, with turn-key projects.
- Reinforcing the HISPASAT groups presence within institutional circles at an international level so as to promote it's fleet for consideration in new projects.

The group’s reinforcement in the American market is carried out through the development of its 61º West orbital position, complemented by the 30º West position. The Amazonas 1 satellite, specifically designed to provide audiovisual and multimedia services, has sufficient capacity to offer its services throughout the American continent, including the West Coast of the USA, Europe and North Africa. HISPASAT’s growth in America is carried out through HISPAMAR SATÉLITES, whose headquarters are located in Brazil.

Actualy, the Amazonas 2 satellite is in process of construction and will be launch in 61º West, probably in 2009.

Alongside the group’s strategic geographical expansion into new markets, important efforts have been made over the last few years to obtain orbit spectrum resources and landing rights in America.

This has converted HISPASAT into the leading European satellite operator and one of the international leaders, in terms of licences on the American continent. Landing rights (landing rights) have been obtained through after extensive effort during the past few years in almost all of the countries in Latin America and North Africa.

Consolidating and commercialising the 30º West position

Another of the HISPASAT group’s strategic lines of business, based on the consolidation of existing business, is as a result of the excellent performance of the Hispasat 1C and 1D satellites.

Launching and placing into orbit the Hispasat 1D satellite, has allowed the HISPASAT group to consolidate its 30º West orbital position, thus meeting a triple objective of: replacing the 1A an 1B satellites, providing HISPASAT with additional capacity and American connectivity and giving the group access to connectivity with the Middle East, thus allowing for communications with that area of the world from America, in one single link.

HISPASAT is the leading satellite operator in the distribution of Spanish and Portuguese speaking television and the diffusion of digital television. More than 30 million households receive television and radio content transmitted via HISPASAT satellites. The group has penetration rates of more than 70% in the Iberian Peninsula and in Latin America.

HISPASAT transmits digital television via large DTH platforms in Spain (Digital +), Portugal (TV Cabo) and America (Telefónica DTH Platforms, RTVE and ZAP). HISPASAT satellites are also known for being large contributors to cable networks in the Iberian Peninsula and in Latin America.
